Leadership

Understand how a leader actually leads.

The Luks Prisma Leadership Assessment evaluates how a leader operates across the horizons, roles, and styles that define the work of leadership — not just the traits that describe the person.

What it measures

Leadership is not a personality trait; it's a set of behaviors deployed under specific conditions. This assessment reads a leader across four registers: how far into the future they operate, which roles they gravitate toward, which styles they lean on, and what forms of recognition sustain them.

The Leadership Assessment focuses on the work of leading, not on the leader as a personality. It clarifies whether a leader is wired for the seat they are being asked to sit in — and where they would be wasted or over-extended.

  • Time horizon — how far ahead the leader naturally operates.

  • Role preference — which leadership roles they gravitate toward and which they avoid.

  • Leadership style — the modes they use to move people and get work done.

  • Recognition drivers — what sustains them in the seat over time.

  • Situational reach — how the pattern holds under pressure or scale.

The dimensions

The assessment reads a leader through four sections — each one a facet of the actual work of leadership.

  1. 01

    Management Horizons

Whether the leader is wired to run the present, plan the next chapter, or shape the long arc.

  2. 02

    Role Preference

Which leadership roles the leader gravitates toward, and which drain them.

  3. 03

    Leadership Style

How the leader moves people — the modes they lean on and the ones they underuse.

  4. 04

    Desired Recognition

What sustains the leader in the seat — the form of feedback and status that keeps them in.

How it's built

The Leadership Assessment is built from executive assessment practice — the kind of work traditionally done by hand, at cost, one leader at a time. It codifies that expert read into an instrument that scales.

  • Grounded in the practice of executive assessment, not general personality theory.

  • Sections designed around the actual sub-problems a leader is asked to solve.

  • Interpretation written for boards, CEOs, and search partners.

  • Comparable across leaders, over time, and across the same leader in different seats.

What you receive

The Leadership Assessment produces the kind of report you can hand a board.

  • Section-by-section written interpretation on horizons, roles, styles, and recognition.

  • A read on the specific leadership seat the assessment was ordered for.

  • Strength patterns and characteristic failure modes at scale.

  • Development anchors keyed to the seat, not to a generic competency library.

  • Comparative view for finalist slates or succession benches.

How teams use it

The Leadership Assessment is the instrument most search partners, boards, and CHROs use when the decision is a leadership seat.

01

Executive selection

Applied to finalists for consequential leadership seats — CEO, GM, functional VP — to turn a finalist conversation into a comparative one.

02

Succession planning

Applied across an internal bench so readiness is read against the specific seat each successor is being staged for.

03

Board evaluation

Applied to a board — as a group and as individuals — so composition can be reasoned about, not only felt.

04

Leadership development

Applied at the start of a development arc so the plan targets the seat the leader is actually growing toward.

What this is not

This is not a leadership personality test. It is a leadership-work instrument built around the sub-problems a leader is being asked to solve.

The principle

“Leadership is not a trait — it's a way of showing up to a specific seat. Evidence is how you know a leader will grow into that seat, not around it.”

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Luks Prisma Leadership Assessment take to complete?

Most leaders complete it in 40 to 55 minutes. It is self-paced. The assessment combines self-report items with situational judgment scenarios that reward reflection over speed.

How is the Leadership Assessment different from a 360-degree review?

A 360 gathers perceptions from those around the leader; this assessment measures the leader's own patterns of decision, communication, and adaptation directly. Both are useful, and they answer different questions. Many clients use them together.

Can the Leadership Assessment be used for succession planning?

Yes. It is one of the primary use cases. It clarifies which candidates already exhibit the patterns the future seat will demand, and where each candidate would need to grow to be ready. It complements, but does not replace, a structured succession conversation.

Does the assessment work for functional leaders — CFO, CTO, CHRO — or only for CEOs?

It is calibrated for any senior seat where judgment, cross-functional influence, and stewardship of others matter. The interpretive frame shifts by seat, and the debrief is where seat-specific meaning is drawn out.

How does this differ from the Penta Personality Assessment?

Penta measures durable personality patterns. The Leadership Assessment measures how those patterns show up specifically when the leader is exercising authority, deciding under uncertainty, and building capacity in others. The two are complementary and often read together.

Is the Leadership Assessment appropriate for external executive searches?

Yes. Search partners use it to bring evidence-conscious material to the client conversation — patterns for structured interview questions, and a debrief that gives the client language to compare finalists on the dimensions that matter for the seat.
